Rather Quirky interpretation of Still Life
This series of works explores the hidden beauty in nature, the work particularly refer’s to the artists fascination of nature and his fascination in staged fine art photography.
In the series ‘Strange Beauty’ Huang uses the still life style method and dimly lit subject matter to highlight the beauty of the subjects he shoots. This gives the plant personality and an identity.
Technically the work has a painterly effect in terms of composition and lighting, the atmosphere of this work takes reference to Baroque painting.
Huang uses the still life in a way which captures the essence and individuality of the cacti. He attempts to stretch the still life further than just a view of textures, but a representation of human fascination for nature and how we attempt to tame it.
The cacti itself is a slight metaphor for human life as well as a representation of our fascination for nature. The work is meant to also create a melancholic atmosphere to explore the general social stigmas attached to men and how this works breaks it.
